International Institute of Communications Australian Chapter Event
TITLE: Navigating the Future of Public Interest Journalism
DATE: March 2025
Yesterday QLP attended an IIC Australian Chapter event on the future of public interest journalism in Australia. The discussion focused on the groundbreaking report, Finding a Way Forward for Australian News, authored by Julie Eisenberg, jointly funded by the Centre For Media Transition and the International Institute of Communications Australian Chapter, and explored critical regulatory and policy interventions to ensure the continued viability of quality journalism.
As consumer habits evolve, the nature of legal regulations shift, and the risks of mis- and disinformation grow, the need for sustainable media frameworks has never been greater. With insights from the author, Julie Eisenberg and other industry experts, Lenore Taylor (Guardian Australia), Professor Allan Fels AO (Public Interest Journalism Initiative) and George Siolis (RBB Economics), ideas spanned potential industry levies, “must-carry” provisions, and broader mechanisms to sustain news production and broadcasting in the digital era.
